22 arraigned over 13 Plateau wedding guests’ killing

The Plateau State Police Command has announced the commencement of the trial of the 22 suspects arrested in connection with the death of 13 wedding guests in Mangun community, Mangu Local Government Area of the state.

PUNCH Metro reports that the incident occurred on June 20, 2025, when a bus carrying passengers from Kaduna State was attacked by a mob, resulting in the deaths and injuries of several people.

Addressing journalists at the command’s headquarters in Jos on Thursday, the state Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Adesina, said the police command had swiftly responded to the incident, deploying men and operational assets to the scene to ensure the arrest of the perpetrators.

He added that the command had also concluded investigations and would be charging the suspects in court.

The CP said, “On June 20, 2025, we received a report at the Mangu Division, reporting that a bus carrying passengers from Kaduna State was being attacked by a mob at the Mangun market square, Mangu LGA.

“Upon receipt of this report, I directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Mangu Division to mobilise and lead a team of policemen to the scene of the crime. On reaching the scene, our men in collaboration with other security agencies successfully dispersed the mob and rescued 21 victims who were rushed to the hospital for medical treatment.

“While conducting a preliminary investigation, we discovered that the victims were travellers from Zaria, Kaduna State who were on their way to attend a wedding ceremony at Kwa village of Qua’anpan Local Government Area in a 32-seater bus with the inscription, “Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria”, when they lost their way and were unfortunately attacked by a mob at the Mangun village, Mangu LGA of Plateau State.”

He further said that in light of the foregoing, he ordered the immediate deployment of men from the State Criminal Investigation Department and State Intelligence Department to Mangu Local Government Area for investigation and intelligence gathering. He also said he deployed tactical teams and other operational assets to the LGA to aid investigation and ensure that the perpetrators of this evil act were arrested and brought to justice.

“On June 21, 2025, at about 07:00 am, I visited the scene of the crime in the company of my management team and heads of other security agencies to assess the situation and put necessary measures in place to forestall any further breakdown of law and order. Today, I am pleased to announce to you that due to the diligent and swift operation of our men, we have arrested 22 suspects, while six suspects are still at large,” he concluded.

The CP assured the people that the command was committed to ensuring that all those involved in the perpetration of the act were brought to justice.

He called on citizens, especially the youths, to avoid taking the law into their hands and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security agency.

“I wish to use this opportunity to assure the good and peace-loving people of Plateau State that the command, under my leadership, is doing everything within the ambits of our constitutional powers, to ensure that all those involved in the perpetration of this evil and inhuman act are arrested and made to face the full weight of the law. I therefore call on all Plateau citizens, especially the youths to avoid taking the law into their hands, and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or any other security agency.

“I called you here today to keep you abreast with the above development on this case, as an investigation has been concluded and we will be charging the suspects in court immediately after this press briefing.”

The suspects were later arraigned in four courts before Justice Boniface Ngyon, at Court 10 of the Plateau State High Court.

When the case was called, the prosecution counsel, S.I. Ikutanwa, sought the court’s permission for the suspects to take their plea on the four-count charges.

However, the defence counsel, Garba Pwol, objected to the plea application, citing that two of the 22 suspects were minors, which rendered the charges incompetent.

According to the defence counsel, the two suspects in question were 13 and 17 years old, pointing out that the law does not allow minors to be exposed to such proceedings. The defence counsel asked the court for time to file an objection.

Responding to the defence counsel’s position, the prosecuting counsel argued that since two of the suspects were below 18 years, their names should be expunged, and the remaining 20 suspects allowed to take their plea.

After hearing the arguments presented by both counsel, Justice Ngyon ruled that it was safer not to take their plea on Thursday, noting that instead, an amended plea would be taken on Friday, excluding the minors.

Justice Ngyon therefore ordered the accused persons to be remanded in police custody and adjourned the case to Friday (today} to enable the prosecution to amend the charges.

AFCON schedule obstacle in Atletico’s Lookman bid

Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman faces a potential obstacle as the club considers the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which could see the Nigeria international miss crucial matches during the winter period, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Spanish giants are closely monitoring the 27-year-old ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Lookman emerging as a prime target to fill the void left by Angel Correa’s anticipated departure this summer.

However, AFCON 2025’s rescheduled dates from December 21 to January 18 in Morocco present a strategic concern for Atletico’s board. The tournament’s move from its original slot to December means Lookman would likely miss a crucial portion of Atletico’s season, including the Spanish Super Cup.

Nigeria’s first game is scheduled for December 23, but Lookman would be expected to join his national team camp at least ten days earlier. His absence during this key stretch is a factor that Atletico must seriously consider, especially given the congested fixture list in winter.

Despite these challenges, Atletico Madrid has not ruled out the transfer. Lookman’s talent and experience are highly valued by Diego Simeone’s side, and if Atalanta lowers its price tag, the move could gain momentum.

However, Atletico faces stiff competition in the race for Lookman’s signature. Napoli are set to intensify their attempts to sign the winger amid Victor Osimhen’s anticipated departure to Galatasaray, with the Serie A giants planning to strengthen both their attacking and wide options.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, revealed that Lookman has ruled out a return to the English Premier League this summer, despite growing interest from Arsenal and West Ham United.

“The player does not want to return to the Premier League,” Moretto said. “But much will depend on the offers that come in.”

This development could boost both Napoli’s and Atletico’s chances, particularly as they compete for the 27-year-old’s signature.

Arsenal’s interest has been complicated by their reluctance to meet Atalanta’s asking price. According to The Athletic, Arsenal have discussed the possibility of signing Lookman during the ongoing summer transfer window but have been put off by the £52 million valuation for the Nigeria international, showing willingness to pay only £43m.

Atletico have reportedly begun early talks with his camp and are willing to meet Atalanta’s asking price, but the AFCON commitment remains a strategic consideration that may influence final negotiations.

UEFA demotes Crystal Palace to Conference League over multi-club rule breach

Crystal Palace have been demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League by UEFA for a breach of multi-club ownership rules, European football’s governing body confirmed on Friday.

US businessman, John Textor, owns a stake in the Eagles and is the majority owner of French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League.

Under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, Lyon have been allowed to keep their place in the second-tier competition of European football as they finished higher in Ligue 1 (6th) than Palace (12th) in the Premier League last season.

Palace qualified for European competition for the first time by winning the FA Cup in May – the club’s first ever major trophy.

NNPC may sell refineries, says CEO

Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Bayo Ojulari, said the company is considering selling some of its refineries as it grapples with challenges in their rehabilitation.

Speaking in an interview with Bloomberg on Thursday at the 9th OPEC International Seminar in Vienna, Austria, Ojulari said a strategic review of NNPC’s refinery operations is underway and expected to be concluded before the end of the year.

He said, “So we’re reviewing all our refinery strategies now. We hope before the end of the year, we’ll be able to conclude that review. That review may lead to us doing things slightly differently.”

When asked if that could include putting the refineries up for sale, Ojulari said, “But what we’re saying is that sale is not out of the question.

“All the options are on the table, to be frank, but that decision will be based on the outcome of the reviews we’re doing now.”

Nigeria has been working to rehabilitate its long-dormant state-owned refineries, including those in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna.

Although the Port Harcourt refinery resumed operations briefly in November 2023, it was shut down again in May for maintenance.

Ojulari attributed some of the setbacks to outdated infrastructure and underperforming technologies.

“So refineries, we made quite a lot of investment over the last several years and brought in a lot of technologies. We’ve been challenged.

“Some of those technologies have not worked as we expected so far. But also, as you know, when you’re refining a very old refinery that has been abandoned for some time, what we’re finding is that it’s becoming a little bit more complicated,” he said.

He also addressed the high cost of oil production in Nigeria, saying operating costs range between $25 and $30 per barrel, partly due to heavy spending on pipeline security.

“For the cost of crude production, there’s a capital cost and there are the operating costs,” he said. “The operating cost right now in Nigeria is hovering over $20 per barrel, which is quite high.

“Part of that is because of the investment we’ve had to make in terms of security of our pipelines, which, as you know, today we have 100 per cent availability of our pipelines. That came out of significant investment.

“So we believe with time, with stability, that cost will start going down, but for now it’s somewhere between $25 and $30 a barrel,” he said.

Despite the challenges, Ojulari said the NNPC is targeting an increase in Nigeria’s oil output to 1.9 million barrels per day by the end of the year.

Villa rat invasion story was a cover for Buhari’s illness — Garba Shehu

By Abdulrahman Zakariyau
Kindly share this story

The Former Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Garba Shehu, has revealed that the story about rats invading the Presidential Villa was fabricated as a distraction from Buhari’s health issues.

In his book “According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson’s Experience,” launched on Tuesday in Abuja, Shehu disclosed that he crafted the Villa rat invasion story to divert public attention away from concerns about President Buhari’s health and capacity to govern.

Prior to Buhari’s return to Nigeria on August 19, 2017, after nearly three months of medical treatment in the United Kingdom, the Indigenous People of Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had alleged that Buhari had been replaced with a clone named Jibrin from Sudan.

Upon Buhari’s return, some Nigerians began to question whether it was truly him or the so-called clone, Jibrin of Sudan, as Kanu claimed.

The situation grew more suspicious when the Presidency announced that Buhari would be working from home instead of his office at the State House, further fueling doubts about his health and leadership capability.

In Chapter 10 of the book, titled “Rats, Spin and All That,” Garba Shehu revealed that the situation became a serious concern for him after Buhari’s Social Media aide, Bashir Ahmad, announced on Twitter (now X) that the former President had returned but would be working from home.

Shehu narrated, “So in the few hours of the president’s return, I picked up a conversation in the office of the CoS, where the chief, a few principal officers and the permanent secretary sat over lunch, a damage to a cable was noticed and it needed fixing.

“Someone speculated that rats may have caused that damage, given that the office was unused for a long time.

“When the surge in calls for explanation of why the president would be working from home, if truly he had recovered his health and fit for the office came, I said to the reporters that the office, which had been in disuse, needed renovation because rats may have eaten and damaged some cables.”

Shehu recalled that the story about rodents invading Nigeria’s Presidential Villa and damaging furniture and the air conditioning system went viral, even ranking among the top five news items on the BBC World News bulletin.

The ex-presidential spokesperson in the book continued, “With reporters wanting to know more, the number of calls increased, with some, including the BBC Hausa, interrogating me on the type of rats we had in the Villa that could eat wire cables.

“To get them (journalists) off my back, I referred them to the strange rats that invaded the country in the 1980s during the rice armada that came here aboard ships bringing the commodity from Southeast Asia.

“As was known of them, in their destructiveness, those rats ate just anything anyone could imagine. Many critics disagreed with me, saying that we were covering up the president’s ill health. Some people had a good laugh over the narrative, and an insignificant few believed me.

“At a later meeting, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed and Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo asked me why I had toed that line of story.

“I said to them that the choice I made was deliberate: I wanted the discussion to shift, to move to any other issue besides the president’s health and his ability to continue in office as the leader of the country. In my view, that spin succeeded. Both of them disagreed, saying that this was well off the mark.”

Mother passes away 5 days to her last daughter’s wedding

The bride, who is said to be the last daughter of the family, could be seen holding back tears at different moments during the ceremony. It was supposed to be a joyful event, but the absence of her mother left a quiet weight on what should’ve been a fully happy day.

In a touching tribute, the family created a life-sized cutout of their late mum and carried it around during the celebration, from dancing to photo sessions as a way to honour her presence, even in her absence.

Napoli reject Galatasaray bid for Victor Osimhen, insist on Saudi sale

Napoli have reportedly rejected a fresh €75m bid from Galatasaray for the signing of Super Eagles striker, Victor Osimhen, despite the Turkish giants meeting the official release clause in his contract.

Nigerian sports journalist and transfer insider Onyebuchi Onokala, also known as Buchi Laba shared the transfer update.
The 26-year-old Nigerian had earlier given his approval to a permanent transfer to Galatasaray, following a successful loan spell, and has no interest in a switch to the Middle East.

According to Onokala, Napoli’s refusal to accept Galatasaray’s offer, despite it matching the contractual clause, is a deliberate strategy to frustrate the deal as they wants to push him to Saudi Arabia.

He said Napoli are actively working to push the Super Eagles striker towards a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia instead.

Onokala wrote: “Napoli officially turns down Galatasaray €75m third offer for Victor Osimhen. The official Release clause Figure.”

“Victor James Osimhen says YES to Galatasaray and wants to continue with the Turkish team,” Onokala added.
