AFCON schedule obstacle in Atletico’s Lookman bid

Atletico Madrid’s pursuit of Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman faces a potential obstacle as the club considers the timing of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, which could see the Nigeria international miss crucial matches during the winter period, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The Spanish giants are closely monitoring the 27-year-old ahead of the 2025/26 season, with Lookman emerging as a prime target to fill the void left by Angel Correa’s anticipated departure this summer.

However, AFCON 2025’s rescheduled dates from December 21 to January 18 in Morocco present a strategic concern for Atletico’s board. The tournament’s move from its original slot to December means Lookman would likely miss a crucial portion of Atletico’s season, including the Spanish Super Cup.

Nigeria’s first game is scheduled for December 23, but Lookman would be expected to join his national team camp at least ten days earlier. His absence during this key stretch is a factor that Atletico must seriously consider, especially given the congested fixture list in winter.

Despite these challenges, Atletico Madrid has not ruled out the transfer. Lookman’s talent and experience are highly valued by Diego Simeone’s side, and if Atalanta lowers its price tag, the move could gain momentum.

However, Atletico faces stiff competition in the race for Lookman’s signature. Napoli are set to intensify their attempts to sign the winger amid Victor Osimhen’s anticipated departure to Galatasaray, with the Serie A giants planning to strengthen both their attacking and wide options.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, revealed that Lookman has ruled out a return to the English Premier League this summer, despite growing interest from Arsenal and West Ham United.

“The player does not want to return to the Premier League,” Moretto said. “But much will depend on the offers that come in.”

This development could boost both Napoli’s and Atletico’s chances, particularly as they compete for the 27-year-old’s signature.

Arsenal’s interest has been complicated by their reluctance to meet Atalanta’s asking price. According to The Athletic, Arsenal have discussed the possibility of signing Lookman during the ongoing summer transfer window but have been put off by the £52 million valuation for the Nigeria international, showing willingness to pay only £43m.

Atletico have reportedly begun early talks with his camp and are willing to meet Atalanta’s asking price, but the AFCON commitment remains a strategic consideration that may influence final negotiations.
