Niherian First Lady Launches ₦50 Million Elderly Support Scheme in Sokoto Tuesday, 16 December 2025 The Nigerian First Lady, Her Excellency Sen. Oluremi Bola Tinubu CON @SenRemiTinubu has on Tuesday launched the Renewed Hope Initiative Elderly Support Scheme (RHIESS) in Sokoto State, where ₦50 Million was disbursed to 250 elderly persons across the 23 local government areas. The third edition of the scheme was inaugurated by the Wife of the Sokoto State Governor, Dr. Fatima Ahmed Aliyu, @AAfatima_ who represented the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON. The event was held under the theme “Finding Joy in Old Age.” Under the scheme, ₦200,000 direct cash grants was provided to 9,500 pre-selected elderly Nigerians aged 65 years and above. Beneficiaries include 250 senior citizens from each of the 36 states, 250 from the Federal Capital Territory, and 250 military and police veterans nominated through the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA). Each state, including Sokoto, has been allocated ₦50 million for beneficiary disbursement. In Sokoto State, the 250 selected beneficiaries received immediate support, including their cash grants, free medical screenings, prescribed medications, and food palliatives. The food items provided by the Sokoto State Government included a 25kg bag of rice, a carton of spaghetti, and cooking oil, further demonstrating the state’s commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of its elderly population. Delivering the First Lady’s address, Dr. Fatima Ahmed Aliyu reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to senior citizens, stating: “This initiative represents a clear transition from promise to action and reflects our commitment to ensuring that our elderly citizens live with dignity, comfort, and renewed hope.” The launch ceremony was attended by notable dignitaries, including Her Excellency Aishatu Idris Muhammad Gobir, Wife of the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State; Hajiya Farida Tukur Bala Bodinga, Wife of the Speaker of the Sokoto State House of Assembly; wives of members of the State Executive Council and Legislature, as well as representatives of women’s and community groups. The First Lady commended state coordinators, partners, and stakeholders for their dedication to the successful implementation of the programme and extended her warm wishes to Nigerians for a peaceful festive season and a prosperous New Year.
