Amsterdam has set aside €100,000 to make its canals safer for animals. The idea is to add small “wildlife escape routes,” like tiny staircases, so cats and other small animals can climb out if they fall into the water and can’t reach the bank. Reports say the city will work with the animal welfare group Dierenambulance to map the spots where animals most often get trapped, and then place the escape routes in those high-risk areas.
