Trump just gave his favorite answer for Greenland plans, and there’s a reason everyone’s taking it with a grain of salt

President Donald Trump told reporters that details about his “concept of a deal” for Greenland will come out in “two months.” He made these comments while flying back to the U.S. on Air Force One after attending the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The “two weeks” timeline is Trump’s usual response for big policy announcements, which is why people are skeptical about this deadline. In 2017, he promised a “phenomenal” tax proposal in two weeks and said he’d decide on leaving the Paris climate agreement in two weeks. In 2020, he promised a new healthcare bill would be signed into law within two weeks, but it never happened. According to Mediaite, when a reporter asked what this “concept” meant and if the U.S. would own the island, Trump kept his answer short. He said, “We’ll have something in two weeks.” He stated the deal was “much more generous to the United States” than the current situation, adding, “It’s a much more generous deal. It has to be.” Trump’s contradicting statements reveal no actual deal exists yet Sources familiar with the talks confirmed there is currently no deal on the table, and nothing has been agreed to. The president even contradicted his own timeline when asked for details. “The time limit is infinity, meaning there is no time limit. It’s forever. You know, you’re about 99 years, 50 years. It’s forever. That was discussed,” Trump told reporters. The talks focus on national security and access to Greenland’s valuable natural resources, especially rare-earth minerals. A U.S. official confirmed the main goal is getting “total access” to parts of Greenland for an unlimited time, making sure U.S. security interests are protected “forever” and “for infinity.”
This access is important because the U.S. wants to update the existing 1951 Defense of Greenland agreement. While that treaty already lets the U.S. operate and expand its military presence, officials want to ensure access won’t be stopped in the future, such as if Greenland becomes independent from Denmark. The president has been focused on various policy initiatives lately, including his recent tax cuts for wealthy Americans. Trump also confirmed that a “piece” of his Golden Dome missile defense project would be placed in Greenland. He said this setup would be “so much better for us and for Europe to have that piece of ice covered by the Golden Dome.” The talks also include expanding efforts by Europe and NATO to boost security across the entire Arctic region. While the U.S. and Denmark continue talking through a high-level working group, major hurdles remain. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said commanders will need to work out the details of extra security requirements, and he hopes for a final solution early in 2026. Danish officials stated there have been no direct talks about giving the U.S. sovereign pieces of land. Despite the lack of a final agreement, the White House remains optimistic. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said, “If this deal goes through, and President Trump is very hopeful it will, the United States will be achieving all of its strategic goals with respect to Greenland, at very little cost, forever. President Trump is proving once again he’s the Dealmaker in Chief.” The president has been making headlines recently, including his response to a supporter’s family tragedy.
