In the late 1990s, Will Smith was arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, coming off back-to-back global blockbuster hits with Independence Day (1996) and Men in Black (1997). When directors Lana and Lilly Wachowski approached him in 1998 to play Neo in The Matrix, they were relatively unknown filmmakers who had only directed one low-budget indie film. They sat down with Smith and gave him a pitch that focused heavily on their revolutionary visual concept. As Smith later recounted on his YouTube channel, the pitch sounded baffling: "Yo bro, we’re gonna design these cameras... you'll be able to jump, but then stop jumping in the middle of the jump, and people can see around you." Failing to grasp the concept of "bullet time," a skeptical Smith passed on the project.Instead, Smith chose to lead the big-budget sci-fi Western comedy Wild Wild West, believing it was a safer bet to cement his status as a box-office king. What followed became one of the most famous "what if" chapters in Hollywood history. The Matrix blew audiences away. Keanu Reeves took the role of Neo, bringing a perfectly reserved, pensive energy that grounded the mind-bending reality. The movie grossed over $460 million worldwide, won four Academy Awards, and changed action cinema forever. Wild Wild West was released later that summer and was heavily panned by critics, who labeled it a "comedy dead zone." Despite a massive budget spent on extensive special effects—including a notorious giant mechanical spider—the film lost money, tanked critically, and swept the Razzie Awards. Smith's rejection fundamentally changed the entire ensemble of The Matrix. Had Smith accepted, the studio intended to cast Val Kilmer as Morpheus. Because Smith is Black, casting another Black actor alongside him wasn't what the studio planned at the time. Smith's exit opened the door for Laurence Fishburne's iconic performance. Sandra Bullock was actively pursued for Trinity but turned it down in part because she wasn't keen on the dynamic with Smith. When Reeves took the lead, Bullock briefly regretted missing a reunion with her Speed co-star before Carrie-Anne Moss ultimately claimed the role.
