Ren Junjie was 15 years old and receiving treatment for cancer at Yilong People’s Hospital in Sichuan, China, when graduation season arrived for his junior high school class. He was unable to return to Yilong Middle School for the official class photograph, but his classmates decided that the picture would not be complete without him. On May 17, 2025, more than 50 students and their teacher put on their school uniforms and walked more than two kilometers from the school to the hospital. They carried benches and everything needed to recreate the graduation photo outside his hospital room. Hospital staff helped Ren change into his school uniform and moved his bed into the garden. His classmates carefully gathered around him, arranging themselves just as they would have at school. Then the camera captured a class together one more time. The students did more than bring a photograph to Ren. They brought the familiar feeling of being surrounded by classmates, teachers, and friends at a milestone they had all worked toward together. Nobody allowed distance or illness to remove him from the memory. Their walk was only about two kilometers, but the meaning reached far beyond that distance. Every uniform, every carried bench, and every student who showed up delivered the same message to Ren Junjie. You are still part of this class. You belong in this photograph. We are graduating together. The image touched millions because it showed friendship in its most practical form: seeing that someone cannot reach an important moment and bringing the entire moment to them.
