Bonnie Lohman was three years old in the early 1980s when her own mother took her and disappeared, part of a custody dispute that turned into an outright abduction. For the next four years, Bonnie was raised under a stepfather's roof in a household that, to her, looked like an ordinary childhood. She had no memory of the father who was searching for her the entire time. At seven, Bonnie was standing in a grocery store when she spotted a milk carton printed with a photo of a missing child. She couldn't read the text underneath it, but she immediately recognized the face as her own. Her stepfather noticed her staring and cut the photo out for her, letting her keep it on one condition: she could never tell anyone why she liked it so much. Bonnie tucked the photo into a box of toys, and months later, doing what children do with a favorite object, left it behind at a neighbor's house. The neighbor recognized the resemblance to an actual missing-child bulletin and called the police. Officers arrived at the home not long after. Bonnie was reunited with the father who had spent four years searching for her, one of only a handful of successful recoveries credited to the 1980s milk carton campaign, which printed roughly five billion cartons nationwide but brought home only a small number of the children pictured on them.
