While some people said Sgt. Stephen James was ordering the trio of Taiwo and Kehinde Oyesunle and their friend, Jeje, to buy him a bottle of beer in Paulson Hotel, at Anibaba Street, others alleged that they were arguing over whose club would win a football match played by foreign clubs.
A man who identified himself as Peter told LEADERSHIP at Anibaba Street, near Paulson Hotel that Taiwo, a naval personnel, won as his own team won the match and made jest of Sgt. James who was allegedly drunk.
He said James was warning them as they laughed at him but to no avail. He was said to have threatened to kill them but later left the hotel bar and stood outside, waiting for them.
Immediately he saw them approaching, he was said to have opened fire at the three of them in cold blood before pointing the AK-47 rifle at himself and pulling the trigger. They all died instantly.
The first version was that James was begging for a bottle of beer by way of an order while the trio told him to comport himself as a policeman before he left the scene, only for him to waylay them and after killing them, he killed himself.
When LEADERSHIP arrived at MILE 12 where the mother of the twins, Beatrice Oyesunle lives, residents said the journalist could not see her because she was sleeping and they refused to give information on the issue.
Meanwhile, many Lagosians interviewed said they were afraid of any policeman carrying a gun. One of them, Andrew Chukwujekwu said, “I am now afraid of the police than the soldiers. The soldiers can beat a civilian, flog him with horse whip but will not kill him or her. One Inspector Oloko also killed his wife in Lagos here. He is still in the police cell. Another shot a danfo driver to death at Amuwo-Odofin. The policeman who was attached to Orile division after killing the driver escaped from the scene. We are just hearing that another trigger-happy policeman killed three Nollywood actors. Honestly, I will not get close to any policeman with the gun,” he said.
A woman, Mama Bosede said: “Policemen are not my friend. They kill people anyhow. They are usually drunk before they go out with their rifles”.
