FG Declares 2026 “Year of Families and Social Development,” Scales Up Nigeria for Women Programme to Empower 25 Million Women 🇳🇬❤️ The Federal Government has officially declared 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development, unveiling a major scale-up of the Nigeria for Women Programme (NFWP-SU) in a renewed push to empower women and strengthen national development. The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to women’s economic inclusion as a cornerstone for family stability, community resilience, and sustainable economic growth. Spearheaded by the Honourable Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, the Nigeria for Women Programme Scale-Up aims to empower 25 million Nigerian women by embedding women-focused economic initiatives into state and local government systems. Through the programme, women will gain improved access to markets, essential services, skills development, and financing, leveraging digital tools such as the Happy Woman App to expand opportunities and participation in the formal economy. The Minister noted that women play critical roles across key sectors including agriculture, trade, manufacturing, technology, health, education, and the creative economy, making their empowerment vital to Nigeria’s social and economic progress. Emphasising a results-driven approach, the Federal Government stated that its strategy prioritises institutions over sentiment, systems over aspirations, and measurable impact over rhetoric. Collaboration with state governments and international partners was identified as essential to ensuring the success of women-led businesses and positioning Nigerian women as agents of lasting social and economic transformation. With the declaration of 2026 as the Year of Families and Social Development, the government signals a decisive shift toward policies that strengthen households, empower women, and drive inclusive national growth.
