Using a small stool under your feet while sitting on the toilet is a simple habit that can significantly improve how your body functions during bowel movements. This method helps recreate a natural squatting position, which is actually the way the human body is designed to eliminate waste more efficiently.
When you lift your feet so that your knees are higher than your hips, your body shifts into a better alignment. In a normal sitting position, the rectum is slightly bent due to a muscle called the puborectalis. This bend creates resistance, making it harder for stool to pass smoothly. However, when you elevate your feet, the angle of the rectum changes from about 90 degrees to around 126 degrees. This straightens the passage, allowing waste to move more easily and quickly.
This change in posture also relaxes the puborectalis muscle. When this muscle is relaxed, there is less obstruction, and the body does not need to strain as much. Reduced straining means less pressure in the abdominal area, making the process more comfortable and natural. Many people notice that bowel movements feel easier and more complete when using this position.
Another key benefit is the reduction of intra-abdominal pressure. Straining while sitting normally can increase pressure inside the abdomen, which may lead to discomfort and long-term issues. By using a stool, gravity helps the process, reducing the effort required. This can lower the risk of problems like constipation and hemorrhoids over time.
This posture also supports better digestive health overall. Easier and more complete elimination helps prevent waste from staying in the colon for too long, which can cause bloating or irregular bowel habits. By making bowel movements smoother, this simple change encourages regularity and improves overall comfort.
For centuries, many cultures have used squatting toilets, which naturally put the body in this optimal position. Modern toilets changed this posture, but using a small stool is an easy way to bring back that natural alignment without changing your bathroom setup.
In simple terms, placing your feet on a stool while using the toilet helps straighten the colon, relax muscles, reduce strain, and make bowel movements quicker and more complete. Over time, this small adjustment can make a noticeable difference in comfort and digestive health.
