In 1958, a U.S. Air Force B 47 accidentally dropped a Mark 6 nuclear weapon near the Gregg family's home in Mars Bluff, South Carolina. Fortunately, its nuclear material was stored separately aboard the aircraft, making a nuclear explosion impossible. But the bomb still contained conventional explosives, which detonated on impact. The blast created a crater roughly 70 feet across, devastated the Gregg property, and injured six family members, though none seriously.
