In 1978, workers dredging England’s Chesterfield Canal found a heavy chain lying on the bottom and decided to remove it. They eventually pulled it free with their dredger, along with a large wooden block attached to the end. They had accidentally removed a drainage plug installed when the canal was built in 1777.
