Chairman of the caretaker committee for Degema, Hon. Tonye Tyger, who confirmed the incident in a chat with newsmen in Port Harcourt, said one of the suspected kidnappers has been arrested by members of the local vigilante, and handed over to the State Criminal Investigations Department (SCID).
Meanwhile, the Rivers State police command has announced the arrest of the policemen in a patrol van that killed a final year engineering student of the University of Port
Harcourt, Oghenekevwe Edah.
The victim was said to have been knocked down while on his way back from Church on Sunday. He was standing at the Assemblies of God Church Junction, Alakahia, Port
Harcourt, when a police van driving against traffic hit him.
The police public relations officer (PPRO) in the state, Ahmad Muhammad, who disclosed this while speaking at a phone-in radio programme monitored in Port Harcourt, said the affected policemen were now reportedly being detained at the command’s headquarters.
Muhammad stated that the command would continue to sustain the existing peace in the state, with the continued deployment of its men to vulnerable communities in the state as a way of fighting crime.
He noted that the level of crime and criminality witnessed in the state during the Christmas festivities were commendable, saying the command was able to achieve that feat due to the proactive steps taken by the commissioner of police, Mr Musa Kimo.
The PPRO said, “One of the strategies we put in place was that we identified places that we felt could be vulnerable to criminal activities and we were able to deploy our men and our resources in order to avert criminal activities.”
